This compressed file contains 2 files in simple text fixed format:
MORT01 - United States data
MORT01PS - Guam, Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands data
These are underlying cause-of-death public-use files for the year 2001 and are released for each data year.
Each file contains a data record for all deaths processed by National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS).
Each data record contains underlying cause and demographic data for a death. The first file contains the data
for the entire country excluding the territories and the second file contains data for all the territories.
The Detail file's records encompass the first 159 characters of the Multiple Cause file's records.
Effective with 1999 data, cause of death information is classified according to the tenth revision of
The International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10).
