Birth cohort files are preferred for multivariate and some other types of detailed analysis becasue they follow a given cohort of births
for an entire year to ascertain their mortality experience. The numerator of the 1999 birth cohort linked file consists of deaths to
infants born in 1999 linked to their corresponding birth certificates, whether the death occurred in 1999 or 2000. The denominator file
is the natality file, that is, all births occurring in 1999.
