Aids Knowledge & Attitudes Supplement, 1994
DSN: CC37.NHIS94.AIDSKNOWAIDS KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDES PUBLIC USE DATA FILE Guidelines for Citation of Data With the goal of mutual benefit, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) requests that recipients of data files cooperate in certain actions related to their use. Any published material derived from the data should acknowledge NCHS as the original source. The suggested citation to appear at the bottom of all tables is as follows: Source: National Center for Health Statistics (1994) When cited in a bibliography, the suggested citation should read: National Center for Health Statistics (1995) Public Use File Documentation, National Health Interview Survey of AIDS Knowledge and Attitudes, 1994 (machine readable data file and documentation), National Center for Health Statistics, Hyattsville, Maryland. The published material should also include a disclaimer that credits any analyses, interpretations, or conclusions reached to the author (recipient of the data file) and not to NCHS, which is responsible only for the initial data. Consumers who wish to publish a technical description of the data should make a reasonable effort to insure that the description is not inconsistent with that published by NCHS. 1994 NHIS AIDS Knowledge and Attitudes Public Use Data File In the 1994 NHIS, information on AIDS knowledge and attitudes was collected from one randomly selected one adult respondent (18 years and older) from every two NHIS families. The NHIS has included a supplement on AIDS since 1987. While many of the items have been asked repeatedly in most of the supplements, there have been changes and analysts are encouraged to review the questionnaire used for this survey before undertaking any analysis. Analysts should also note that in 1994, the AIDS supplement was administered for the entire year, but for only one half sample of the respondents. The 1994 AIDS survey covered these topics: 1. Sources of AIDS information 2. Knowledge about the modes of HIV transmission, clinical features of HIV infection and AIDS, and the HIV antibody test 3. Perceived likelihood of transmission by casual contact 4. Experience with blood donation and HIV antibody testing 5. Content of post-test counseling 6. Perceived effectiveness of condoms and mutual monogamy to prevent the spread of HIV 7. Personal knowledge of someone with AIDS or HIV The response rate to the 1994 AIDS Survey was 77.1 Percent and was calculated as follows: The response rate to the NHIS Core questionnaire was 94.1 percent for the entire year. Of the adults eligible for the AIDS supplement, 81.9 percent responded. Multiplying these two response rates together yields the overall response rate to the AIDS Survey (77.1 percent). Each record included in the AIDS file contains a final weight (tape locations 201-206). Weights must be used to make accurate estimates based on this data tape. Because the AIDS Survey included only one adult per NHIS family, the weight on this tape is different from the weight for the same person on the NHIS Core Person tape.
