Scientific Data DocumentationAids Knowledge & Attitudes Supplement, 1992DSN: CC37.NHIS92.AIDSKNOW ABSTRACT 1992 NATIONAL HEALTH INTERVIEW SURVEY (NHIS) AIDS KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDES PUBLIC USE DATA FILE Guidelines for Citation of Data With the goal of mutual benefit, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) requests that recipients of data files cooperate in certain actions related to their use. Any published material derived from the data should acknowledge NCHS as the original source. The suggested citation to appear at the bottom of all tables is as follows: Source: National Center for Health Statistics (1992) When cited in a bibliography, the suggested citation should read: National Center for Health Statistics (1993). Public Use File Documentation, National Health Interview Survey of AIDS Knowledge and Attitudes, 1992 (machine readable data file and documentation), National Center for Health Statistics, Hyattsville, Maryland The published material should also include a disclaimer that credits any analyses, interpretations, or conclusions reached to the author (recipient of the data file) and not to NCHS, which is responsible only for the initial data. Consumers who wish to publish a technical description of the data should make a reasonable effort to insure that the description is not inconsistent with that published by NCHS. 1992 NHIS AIDS Knowledge and Attitudes Public Use Data Tape This tape contains the part of the 1992 National Health Interview Survey related to AIDS knowledge and attitudes. For this survey, information was collected from one randomly selected adult (18 years and older) from half of the families who participated in the NHIS. Due to the length of other NHIS questionnaires in the field in 1992, the AIDS questionnaires was administered in only one-half, of NHIS sample households. In 1991, it was administed in every NHIS sample household. The AIDS survey covered several different topic areas: 1. Sources of Information 2. Knowledge-included true-false items on modes of transmission and pathogenesis; respondents were also asked to rate the likelihood of transmission of the AIDS virus by various forms of casual contact 3. Experience with blood donation 4. Experience with HIV antibody testing 5. Awareness of AZT 6. Perceptions of the effectiveness of condoms and knowledge about condom use 7. Perceived risk of acquiring HIV infection The response rate to the AIDS survey was 83.2 percent and was calculated as follows: The response rate to the NHIS Core questionnaire was 95.7 percent. Of the eligible sample persons from the CORE, 86.9 percent responded to the AIDS questionnaire. Multiplying these two response rates together yields the overall response rate to the AIDS section (83.2 percent). Each record included on this AIDS tape contains a final weight (tape locations 201-206). Weights must be used to make accurate estimates based on this data tape. Because the AIDS survey included only one adult in one-half of NHIS sample families, the weight on this tape is different from the weight for the same adult on the NHIS Core Person tape.
