Scientific Data DocumentationAids Knowledge & Attitudes Supplement, 1993DSN: CC37.NHIS93.AIDSKNOW 1993 NHIS AIDS Knowledge and Attitudes Public Use Tape In the 1993 NHIS, information on AIDS knowledge and attitudes was collected from one randomly selected adult respondent (18 years and older) from each NHIS family. The NHIS has included a supplement on AIDS since 1987. While many of the items have been asked repeatedly in most of the supplements, there have been changes and analysts are encouraged to review the questionnaire used for this survey before undertaking any analysis. Analysts should also note that in 1993, the AIDS supplement was administered in only the third and fourth quarters of the year. If some of the items show a seasonal variation in responses, then the results for 1993 may differ from results in 1992. The 1993 AIDS survey covered these topics: 1. Sources of AIDS information 2. Perceptions of discrimination against persons with AIDS 3. Knowledge about the modes of HIV transmission, clinical features of HIV infection and AIDS, and the HIV antibody test 4. Perceived likelihood of transmission by casual contact 5. Experience with blood donation and HIV antibody testing 6. Content of post-test counseling 7. Perceived effectiveness of condoms and mutual monogamy to prevent the spread of HIV 8. Perceived risk of acquiring HIV infection 9. Personal knowledge of someone with AIDS or HIV 10. Use of professional mental health counseling because of concern about AIDS The response rate to the 1993 AIDS Survey was 80 percent and was calculated as follows: The response rate to the NHIS Core questionnaire in quarters 3 and 4 was 94.7 percent. Of the adults eligible for the AIDS supplement, 84.5 percent responded. Multiplying these two response rates together yields the overall response rate to the AIDS Survey (80.0 percent). Each record included in the AIDS file contains a final weight (tape locations 201-206). Weights must be used to make accurate estimates based on this data tape. Because the AIDS Survey included only one adult per NHIS family, the weight on this tape is different from the weight for the same person on the NHIS Core Person tape.GUIDELINES FOR CITATION OF DATA With the goal of mutual benefit, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) requests that recipients of data files cooperate in certain actions related to their use.
