Any published material derived from the data should acknowledge NCHS as the original source. The suggested citation to appear at the bottom of all tables is as follows: Source: National Center for Health Statistics (1992) When cited in a bibliography, the suggested citation should read: National Center for Health Statistics (1994). Consumers who wish to publish a technical description of the data should make a reasonable effort to insure that the description is not inconsistent with that published by NCHS. 1992 NHIS Health Insurance Public Use Data Tape This tape contains the part of the 1992 National Health Interview Survey related to health insurance. For this survey, information was collected from a household respondent about all family members who participated in the NHIS. The health insurance questionnaire was administered in all of the NHIS sample households. The health insurance survey covered several different topic areas: 1. Type of health care coverage: Medicare, Medicaid, military/CHAMPUS/CHAMP-VA, other public assistance, private insurance. 2. Private insurance characteristics reported by the respondent: HMO status, choice of doctor, source of coverage, existence of employer subsidies for premiums. 3. Type of private insurance obtained by comparing reported plan name with precoded list of plans: fee for service plans, HMO type, HMO enrollment size, correspondence between respondent-reported HMO status and plan list code. 4. Individual coverage status. The response rate to the health insurance survey was 91.6 percent and was calculated as follows: The response rate to the NHIS Core questionnaire was 95.7 percent. Of respondents to the Core, 95.7 percent responded to the health insurance questionnaire. Multiplying these two response rates together yields the overall response rate to the health insurance section (91.6 percent). Dummy records were created for non-respondents to the health insurance questionnaire (see tape location 336). These dummy records were assigned "not ascertained" codes as appropriate. Each record included on this health insurance tape contains final basic weights (tape locations 201-227), the chronic condition factor (tape locations 190-200), the 6.5 weight (tape locations 228-236), and estimated data fields (tape locations 237-335). Weights must be used to make accurate estimates based on this data tape. The weights on this tape are the same as the weights for the same individuals on the NHIS Core Person tape.RECORD LAYOUT Tape Locations 1-26 Outline of Items and Codes Number of Records = 128,412 ______________________________________________________________________________ Tape Locations Item No. Frequency Items and Codes ______________________________________________________________________________ 1-2 - RECORD TYPE 128,412 85.
